Stockholm neighbourhoods for expats — where to rent
Six neighbourhoods, six different trade-offs. Each one has live andrahand listings, real commute times, and expat-specific context — not generic tourism copy.
Södermalm
Hip and creativeStockholm's most expat-dense island neighbourhood, packed with independent cafés, creative studios, and waterfront parks. Andrahand competition is fierce — listings rarely last 48 hours.
Östermalm
Upscale and internationalStockholm's most prestigious address: embassy buildings, pre-war architecture, and international schools within walking distance. The most expensive andrahand market in Sweden — but listings do appear.
Vasastan
Residential and well-connectedStockholm's most balanced central neighbourhood: genuine residential character, excellent T-bana connections, larger flat supply, and rents that sit noticeably below Söder and Östermalm.
Kungsholmen
Calm and professionalAn island west of the city centre with water on three sides, strong café culture, and rents that undercut Södermalm and Östermalm — the professional expat's quiet favourite.
Norrmalm
Central and transientStockholm's commercial core — T-Centralen, Hötorget, and Sergels torg. Residential listings are sparse but turn over quickly. Ideal for expats on short assignments who prioritise commute over character.
Lidingö
Family-friendly and leafyA leafy island municipality east of Stockholm, preferred by expat families for its international schools, lower density, and quality of life — at the cost of a longer commute into the city.
